ABOUT CALVARY TEMPLE CHURCH

We’re a community of people who love God and care about people. Wherever you’re at in life, you’re welcome here.

OUR STORY

Over the years, thousands of people have been saved and touched by God’s grace through the many ministries of Calvary Temple. Our church has been a family of believers of all ages and backgrounds, actively proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ in Winnipeg and around the world.

Almost 120 years after being planted, the passion for seeing people find hope in Jesus Christ continues as we honor the past, embrace the present and build the future.

WHO WE ARE

1. Calvary Temple is an Urban church.

Located on the 400 block of Hargrave Street we are in the heart of Winnipeg's downtown core. Our surrounding community is one of Winnipeg's poorest, densest, and most culturally diverse neighbourhoods.

2. Calvary Temple is a Diverse church.

Our large and diverse community celebrates inclusivity across generations, cultures, ethnicities, regions, and socio-economic backgrounds.

3. Calvary Temple is a Historic church.

Planted in 1907, Calvary Temple is one of the oldest and most historically significant Pentecostal churches in Canada. We were the first Pentecostal Church in Western Canada.

4. Calvary Temple is an Attractional church.

As a large and influential church that is strategically located in the heart of the city, Calvary Temple has always existed with an invitational approach to church growth and outreach.

5. Calvary Temple is a Missional church.

Whether we are supporting local community engagement through our neighborhood partners and programs, Mission Canada Workers around the province or Global Missions around the world, Calvary Temple has always been and will always be a mission minded movement.

6. Calvary Temple is an Innovative church.

From creative outreach events in the early 1900's to the vast world of multimedia in the early 2000’s—from radio to television, bus ministries to camp ministries—Calvary Temple has always fostered an innovative and creative approach to outreach and ministry.

7. Calvary Temple is a Spirit-led church.

We are a praying church who was birthed out of revival. We rely on the power of the Holy Spirit and continue to pray for a move of God that will sweep across our nation.

Our History

In 1907, a Winnipeg business man named A.H. Argue experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and began a prayer meeting in his living room on St. John’s Avenue. His experience was soon shared by others and a new church was started that became the mother church of the Pentecostal movement in Western Canada.

The Lord continued to bless this new congregation and it continued to grow as they moved from place to place under the spiritual guidance of many pastors and committed church leaders. In 1938 the congregation purchased a church building on the corner of Hargrave Street and Cumberland Ave. and renamed it Calvary Temple.

In 1953, H.H. Barber became the Pastor, and in 1955, the first CT Youth Camps were held at Red Rock Lake. In 1975, the auditorium at 440 Hargrave Street was completed. Pastor Bruce and Miriam Martin served as Lead Pastor from 1997 to 2022, and Pastor Adam and Shandy Browett became Lead Pastor in February of 2024.
