What We Believe

We believe in the authority of the Bible, the divinity of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Our faith is centered on growing in our relationship with God, serving our neighbors, and sharing the message of hope and redemption that comes from God's unconditional love for all people.

1. The Triune God

We believe in one eternal God, existing as Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. The Father guides salvation and judgment. Jesus, fully God and human, lived sinlessly, died for our sins, resurrected, and sits at the Father's right hand. The Holy Spirit brings life, draws to repentance, and indwells believers, making them God's children.

2. Salvation

Salvation is God's loving act, available to all. Through obedience, Christ became a sinless sacrifice for our sins, making us righteous. His life, death, resurrection, and ascension provide salvation for those who repent and confess faith in Him. This brings forgiveness, new birth, and liberation from sin, including healing, with the Holy Spirit assuring salvation and empowering Christ-like living.

3. The Bible

We believe the Bible, Old and New Testaments, is God's true revelation of His character and saving purposes. It is the final authority for our beliefs and conduct, with the Holy Spirit enabling its understanding.

4. The Church

Jesus Christ is the church's head, uniting all believers by the Spirit. Each local church participates in God's mission to restore all things, focusing on His transforming presence. We respond through worship, prayer, proclamation, discipleship, and fellowship, including water baptism (identifying with Christ's death and resurrection) and the Lord's Supper (proclaiming His death until His return). The Spirit bestows gifts for ministry and empowers leaders to equip the church.

Community

We are deeply committed to being the hands and feet of Christ in our community, actively participating in initiatives that address real needs and bring hope. From partnering with local food banks to ensure families have access to nutritious meals, to organizing drives for warm clothing in anticipation of our cold Manitoba winters, and supporting programs that serve those experiencing homelessness, we believe in demonstrating God's love through practical action.

1. Introduction: A Century of Faith and Community in Winnipeg

Calvary Temple has been part of Winnipeg’s story for more than 100 years. It all started back in 1907, when a group of passionate people came together, inspired by the Pentecostal movement. They believed deeply in the power of the Holy Spirit and were eager to share their faith in a fresh, powerful way. From the beginning, Calvary Temple was more than just a church building—it was a community. As the years went by, the church grew and changed under the guidance of different pastors and leaders, each bringing their own style, vision, and heart to the mission. But through it all, the focus stayed the same: helping people connect with God and each other.

2. Genesis and Early Foundations (Pre-1907 to 1938)

Calvary Temple’s story is one of deep roots and open arms. It’s a story about people, purpose, and the power of God to transform lives—yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Pre-Calvary Temple Era: First Baptist Church (1873-1938)

The history of Calvary Temple Church is deeply rooted in the religious landscape of Winnipeg, tracing its lineage through a significant predecessor and the burgeoning Pentecostal movement of the early 20th century. The building that would eventually become Calvary Temple at 400 Hargrave Street initially served as the home for the First Baptist Church, one of western Canada's earliest Baptist congregations. This congregation was established in Winnipeg in 1873 by Reverend Alexander McDonald, who subsequently oversaw the construction of their first church building on Rupert Avenue in 1875.

This initial structure on Rupert Avenue was later sold to the Salvation Army, which demolished it in 1900 to construct their own citadel. As the First Baptist congregation grew, mirroring Winnipeg's own expansion, a larger edifice became necessary. Under the leadership of their third minister, Reverend Alexander Grant, prominent Toronto architects Edward Langley and Edmund Burke were commissioned in 1893 to design a new church at the intersection of Hargrave Street (then Charlotte Street) and Cumberland Avenue. Construction of this substantial project, supervised by local architect Hugh McCowan, began in 1893 and was completed the following year, costing approximately $45,000. Services commenced in the basement of the new church in February 1893, even as the main structure was still under construction.

The architectural design of the First Baptist Church was notable for its Romanesque Revival style, characterized by a monochromatic composition of red brick and red sandstone. Its most distinctive feature was a four-storey bell tower, approximately 18 meters in height, with round-arched openings, a pinnacled belfry, and a steep pyramidal roof. The interior featured an open auditorium, rounded vaults, and galleries, with a sloping floor towards the sanctuary. The basement included a semi-circular lecture room and classrooms, designed for Christian education. By 1904, the church's continued growth led to an addition by architect J.H.G. Russell and builder Andrew McBean, which doubled the auditorium's seating capacity to 1,500 people.

3. Birth of Calvary Temple and Early Pentecostalism (1907-1938)

Calvary Temple’s own distinct history began on May 5, 1907, during a prayer meeting held in the North End of Winnipeg on St. John Avenue. This gathering was founded by A.H. Argue, a lay businessman who had experienced a profound spiritual awakening after seeking the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit" at William Durham's North Avenue Mission in Chicago in the spring of 1907. Argue’s return to Winnipeg and the subsequent Pentecostal meetings in his home marked the genesis of the Pentecostal Movement in Western Canada, with reports of attendees speaking in tongues "as in New Testament days".The rapid growth of the congregation necessitated several moves to larger venues. After outgrowing Argue's home, meetings were held at an unused store at 501 Alexander Avenue (1907-1910), followed by the Coronation Block/Shanghai Restaurant (1910-1915), Liberal Hall/Original Hull's Bookstore (1915-1918), Langside Hall/Kirkwood Block (1918-1921), and Wesley Pentecostal/Jesus Saves Church at 520 William Avenue (1921-1938).

A.H. Argue served as Calvary Temple's founding pastor from 1907 to 1912, and again from 1924-1925. His leadership was instrumental in shaping early Pentecostalism in Canada. He established the "Apostolic Messenger" paper in 1907, which reached a circulation of 40,000, disseminating news of the Winnipeg revival globally. Argue's evangelistic efforts, often involving his children Watson, Zelma, and Beulah, nurtured the movement's revival traditions throughout the 1920s. He was a key figure in the formation of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC), advocating for a Dominion Charter in 1918 to incorporate Pentecostal churches and helping to define the movement's ideological framework. His preaching emphasized Salvation, Divine Healing, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and the imminent return of Jesus. The burgeoning Pentecostal congregation, characterized by its evangelical and fundamentalist tenets, continued to expand, attracting believers locally. In the fall of 1938, the First Baptist Church, which had merged with Broadway Baptist to form Broadway First Baptist Church, sold its building at 400 Hargrave Street to the Pentecostal Assembly of God Congregation of the City of Winnipeg for $19,500. This acquisition was a significant milestone, as Calvary Temple, now officially named, became the pioneer Pentecostal Church in western Canada and a base for the sect's further expansion. The building was dedicated by Calvary Temple on November 13, 1938, marking a new chapter for both the structure and the Pentecostal movement in Winnipeg.Calvary Temple's denominational affiliation with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) is central to its theological identity. The PAOC, formed in 1919 and later affiliating with the Assemblies of God in 1920 (before becoming independent in 1925), emphasizes the "Full Gospel," which includes Christ as Saviour, Healer, Spirit-Baptizer, and Soon Coming King. This theological framework underpins Calvary Temple's ministries, including its strong focus on Christian education, Sunday School classes, and Bible study sessions for adults.

4. Growth, Expansion, and Enduring Leadership (1939-1997)

The mid-20th century marked a period of substantial growth and consolidation for Calvary Temple, characterized by significant leadership tenures and ambitious building projects.

Post-Acquisition Development (1939-1952)

Following the acquisition of the 400 Hargrave Street building in 1938, Calvary Temple continued to thrive. Pastoral leadership during this period included Daniel Newton Buntain (1925-1937) and Watson Argue (1937-1948). Watson Argue, son of the founder A.H. Argue, played a crucial role in nurturing the church's revival traditions and evangelistic efforts, building upon the foundation laid by his father. The church's continued vitality and expanding congregation necessitated further physical expansion of its facilities.

The H.H. Barber Era (1953-1997)

A defining period in Calvary Temple's history was the 44-year tenure of Herbert Hanbidge Barber, who became lead pastor in 1953 and served until his retirement in 1997. His extended leadership provided remarkable stability and consistent programmatic development, allowing the church to grow significantly in both size and influence.Pastor Barber was a visionary leader responsible for establishing two key community initiatives: the Calvary Temple Youth Camp and the Calvary Place Personal Care Home. The Youth Camp, located on Red Rock Lake in the Whiteshell, was established in 1955 and has ministered to children and youth for over 55 years, providing recreational and spiritual programs. The Calvary Place Personal Care Home, incorporated in 1998 and commencing active operations on January 24, 2000, provides Christian-based care to seniors. While its formal operation began after his retirement, its establishment was a direct result of his vision and initiative.

Beyond local initiatives, Pastor Barber significantly expanded the church's reach through media. In January 1962, he launched the "Faith to Live By" television program, which he hosted for nearly 50 years, making it one of the longest-running television programs in Canadian history. This program, along with radio broadcasts, extended Calvary Temple's message and influence far beyond Winnipeg. The physical infrastructure of Calvary Temple also underwent substantial transformations during this era. A Sunday School building was appended to the east side of the original brick church in 1955 to accommodate the church's emphasis on Christian education. In 1974, a major expansion saw the construction of a new, larger structure next door, capable of seating 2,400 people, which was reportedly the largest church in Western Canada at the time. The original First Baptist Church building was then repurposed for youth groups and education sessions. The year 1985 marked a significant architectural change. The original 1893-94 church building, except for its historic bell tower, was demolished to make way for a new Christian education facility. The City of Winnipeg intervened due to the building's age, leading to an agreement to preserve and repair the Romanesque Revival bell tower, which was formally recognized as a municipally-designated historic site on March 11, 1985. Elements from the old church, such as pews, stained glass, and the pulpit, were salvaged and integrated into the new Buntain Chapel, and the original organ was reinstalled in a smaller formation within the chapel. This strategic preservation of the tower allowed the church to honor its historical roots while modernizing its facilities to meet contemporary needs.

5. Modern Era and Community Impact (1997-2025)

The transition into the 21st century has seen Calvary Temple continue its mission, adapting to new challenges and expanding its reach both locally and globally.

Leadership Transition and Continuity (1997-2024)

Pastor Bruce Martin - April 13, 1997 (YouTube/Calvary Temple Archives)

Following Pastor H.H. Barber's retirement in 1997, Bruce A. Martin assumed the lead pastor role, serving for 25 years until his retirement in August 2022. Pastor Martin's tenure included navigating the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the church significantly enhanced its live streaming capabilities to reach congregants online and across the world. This adaptation allowed the church to maintain connection and ministry despite physical gathering restrictions, demonstrating its resilience and commitment to outreach in changing circumstances.

In February 2024, Pastor Adam Browett, along with his wife Shandy and their four children, moved to Winnipeg to assume the role of Lead Pastor at Calvary Temple. Pastor Browett brings extensive experience from multicultural churches across Western Canada and is recognized for his passion for reaching challenging areas and fostering community engagement. His leadership is focused on shaping Calvary Temple's future impact in Winnipeg, emphasizing practical steps for the church to be a "light of the world" in its downtown community.

6. Calvary Temple's Dynamic Future (2025 & Beyond)

Calvary Temple Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, represents a century-long narrative of faith, growth, and community engagement. From its origins as a small Pentecostal prayer meeting founded by A.H. Argue in 1907, the church has evolved into a significant urban and global ministry. Its history is marked by a dynamic interplay between spiritual revival, strategic architectural expansion, and adaptive leadership. The acquisition of the former First Baptist Church building at 400 Hargrave Street in 1938 was a pivotal moment, providing a substantial base for its burgeoning Pentecostal congregation.Subsequent expansions, particularly the 1974 construction of a 2,400-seat sanctuary and the 1985 preservation of the historic bell tower amidst demolition and new construction, underscore the church's commitment to both growth and heritage. The enduring tenures of pastors like H.H. Barber, who led for 44 years, provided stability and continuity, enabling the establishment of vital community initiatives such as the Calvary Temple Youth Camp and the Calvary Place Personal Care Home, alongside pioneering media outreach like the "Faith to Live By" television program.

Under its current leadership, including Lead Pastor Adam Browett who commenced his role in February 2024, Calvary Temple continues to demonstrate remarkable adaptability. It embraces technological advancements for broader reach, maintains a diverse array of local ministries catering to various demographics and needs (including new immigrants, youth, and the deaf community), and sustains extensive global missions work across dozens of countries. The church's consistent focus on Christian education, evangelism, and holistic community well-being reflects its core theological tenets as a Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada affiliate.Looking towards 2025, Calvary Temple remains an active and forward-looking institution, with planned events such as the Advance Leadership Conference and the EDGE leadership training camp. Its trajectory suggests a continued commitment to its foundational mission, adapting to contemporary challenges while leveraging its rich history to serve as a vibrant and caring community, striving to be a "light of the world" in downtown Winnipeg and beyond. The church's journey from a small prayer meeting to a multi-faceted organization with significant local and international impact stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and dynamic future.

Statement of Faith

We believe in the following essential truths, which guide our faith and practice as a community committed to the historic creeds of the church, evangelical convictions, and the Full Gospel that Christ is Savior, Healer, Spirit-Baptizer, and Soon Coming King.

THE TRIUNE GOD

We believe in one God, the Creator, who eternally exists in unity as three equal persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This Triune God is loving, holy, infinite, just, and worthy of all worship. The Father accomplishes His plan of salvation through both redemption and judgment, and all things will ultimately be subject to Him, with His kingdom having no end. The Father sent the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. Jesus was fully human and fully God, revealing the Father and the kingdom of God through His sinless life, teaching, and miracles. He died for our sins, was raised from the dead by God, and now sits at the right hand of the Father. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father through the Son, giving life throughout creation, drawing people to repentance and new life in Jesus Christ. Through the Spirit's indwelling, the Father and the Son are present to all believers, making them children of God.

The Bible

We believe the Bible, comprising both the Old and New Testaments, is the written revelation of God's character and saving purposes for humanity and all creation. As God's revelation, the entire Bible is true and trustworthy, serving as the final and absolute authority for belief and conduct. The Holy Spirit, who inspired the Bible, also enables its interpretation and application in our lives.

Creation and the Fall

We believe God created and sustains the heavens and the earth, which magnificently display His glory. Humankind, formed in the image of God as both male and female, is entrusted with the care of God's creation as faithful stewards. However, as a result of human rebellion, sin and death entered the world, distorting the image of God and all of God's good creation. We also believe that angels were created to worship and serve God, but some, including Satan, chose to rebel and oppose God's purposes. Christ gives believers victory over Satan and these demons.

Salvation

We believe salvation is graciously available to all people through the loving, redemptive act of the Triune God. Through obedience to the Father, Christ gave Himself as a ransom, becoming sin for us though He knew no sin, offering Himself and shedding His blood on the cross so that in Him we might become righteous with God.The life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ provide the way of salvation for those who, by God's grace, repent from their sin and confess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Salvation means receiving the Spirit, being forgiven, reconciled with God and others, born again, and liberated from sin and darkness, transferring the believer into God's kingdom. This liberation includes healing—spiritual, physical, emotional, or mental—as a foretaste of our future, complete restoration. Those who remain in Christ are assured of salvation on judgment day by the indwelling Holy Spirit, who sanctifies and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.

Spirit Baptism

We believe that on the Day of Pentecost, Jesus poured out the promised Holy Spirit on the church, and as His return draws near, He continues to baptize believers in the Holy Spirit. This empowers them to continue His work of proclaiming, with both speech and action, the good news of the arrival and coming of the kingdom of God. This experience is available for everyone, male and female, of every age, status, and ethnicity. The sign of speaking in tongues indicates that believers have been baptized with the Holy Spirit and signifies the nature of Spirit baptism as empowering our communication to be His witnesses with speech and action, as we continue to pray in the Spirit.

The Church

We believe Jesus Christ is the head of the church, and all who are united with Christ are joined by the Spirit to His body. Each local church is an expression of the universal church, whose role is to participate in the mission of God to restore all things. Central to the church is the shared experience of the transforming presence of God.The church responds with worship, prayer, proclamation, discipleship, and fellowship, including the practices of water baptism and the Lord's Supper. Baptism by immersion symbolizes the believer's identification with Christ in His death and resurrection. The Lord's Supper symbolizes Christ's body and blood and our communion as believers, and when shared together, it proclaims His death in anticipation of His return. The Spirit gives all gifts to the church to minister to others in love for the purpose of bearing witness to Christ and for the building up of the church. The Spirit also empowers leaders, both female and male, to equip the church to fulfill its mission and purposes.

Restoration

Our great hope is for the imminent return of Christ in the air to receive His own, both the living who will be transformed and the dead in Christ who will be resurrected bodily. Christ will complete at His second coming the restoration begun when He initiated God's kingdom at His first coming. Christ will liberate creation from the curse, fulfill God's covenant to Israel, and defeat all powers that oppose God.Ultimately, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. God will judge the living and the dead, a judgment that is God's gracious answer to humanity's cry for justice to prevail throughout the earth and is consistent with God's character as loving, holy, and just. The unredeemed will go away into eternal punishment, but the redeemed into eternal life. The redeemed will enjoy the presence of God where there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

F.A.Q

What should I wear?

Whatever you feel comfortable in. Sweat pants are fine and so is a suit (not a birthday suit though! lol). Wear what you want to wear because church isn’t about how you look

Will I be singled out in the service?

Whatever you feel comfortable in. Sweat pants are fine and so is a suit (not a birthday suit though! lol). Wear what you want to wear because church isn’t about how you look

Will I be asked to give money?

No, not really. We talk about money a lot because it plays an important role in our lives. And we do ask people who call our church home to partner financially with their church, but you should feel no obligation to give.

How long is a church service?

About 60 minutes from start to finish.

Do I have to be a Christian to attend?

We are a Christian church, but you do not have to be a Christian to attend. Each week we meet people who are just exploring life and the questions it brings

MISSION

In Winnipeg's West and North ends, families are under stress. Poverty, crime and addictions are prevalent. The needs of children and families are very real. We believe that Jesus cares for and loves them very much. Our mission is to reach out in Christ's love to needy children and youth in our community with the life and hope that is found in Jesus Christ. Our mission is to change the destiny of children and youth in Winnipeg in the love of Jesus Christ, and to raise a generation that is passionate about Him and others.
